興望館セツルメントは1919年に日本基督教婦人矯風会外人部関東部会によって設立された。開設当初から保育事業に取り組んだことが知られている。本稿では，現在保管されている戦前期唯一の保育日誌である『保育日誌 昭和4年』を用い，同年度の年長幼児（5歳児）2名に着目し1年間の記録を通して，一人一人の子ども理解がどのようになされ，子どものニーズに応えてどのような保育が提供されていたのかを明らかにした。有資格の保姆が記述した記録からは，幼児の心もちの把握や対応が的確になされ，そうした関わりに応じて幼児の成長が見取れることが確認された。第二次世界大戦以前のセツルメントの保育事業において，個別の幼児理解に基づく保育がなされていた。
The Kobo-kan Settlement for childcare was founded in 1919. This study reviews The 1929 Childcare Diary at Kobo-kan. We focused on two five-year-old boys in the diary and following the description of the two, it became clear how the writer, a nursery teacher, had grasped the needs of the two boys and how they were cared for. At the daycare center in 1929, infants grew up in a relationship within the infant group, with the care of nursery teachers.
The nursery teacher accurately understood and recorded the growth of the infants at the day nursery before World WarII.
