For these younger members, Byronism meanta rebellious spirit against social, moral and religious norms, modeled after various exaggerated anti-social or anti-Christian images extracted from Byron and Byronic heroes. Whilst the youngerBungakukai members’ enthusiasm for Byron was formed under the influence of To ̄koku’s Byronism,the former was less serious and thoughtful than the latter. Arguably, it derived from the factthat these younger literati were too inexperienced and innocent to be able to discern norms tochallenge and break down, while To ̄koku came to realize the restraints of social norms through hisbitter married life.
