He defines God as “Being itself” and a human being as “the mixture of being and non-being.” Therefore his theology is greatly different from the theologies like Barth’s which are based on the interpretation of the Bible and the personal relationship between God and human beings. However, it is very essential for Tillich to use the ontological conceptions because his faith is rooted in the ontological coincidence between God and human beings. Therefore he insists on the predominance of ontological relationship compared with the personal relationship between them. We can also see the same insistence with regard to the recognition of God in Tillich’s theology; the ontological recognition is predominant compared with the cosmological recognition. According to Tillich, the former is the way that one can directly recognize God based on the mystical union of subject and object which is rooted in the ontological coincidence between God and human beings. The latter is the way that one tries to reach God based on reason, but it is not sure whether it can do it or not because the reason is based on the separation of subject and object. Therefore Tillich insists that the ontological recognition is predominant compared with the cosmological recognition. The predominance of the ontological recognition is, I think, the starting point of Tillich’s theology and the grace in recognition that precedes all kinds of recognition. 内容記述 | Paul Tillich’s theology is sometimes called philosophical theology or ontological theology because it is based on the ontological relationship between God and human beings. He defines God as “Being itself” and a human being as “the mixture of being and non-being.” Therefore his theology is greatly different from the theologies like Barth’s which are based on the interpretation of the Bible and the personal relationship between God and human beings. However, it is very essential for Tillich to use the ontological conceptions because his faith is rooted in the ontological coincidence between God and human beings. Therefore he insists on the predominance of ontological relationship compared with the personal relationship between them. We can also see the same insistence with regard to the recognition of God in Tillich’s theology; the ontological recognition is predominant compared with the cosmological recognition.
