内容記述 | This study seeks to research the development of derivatives with the suffix ‘-able’ in Middle English. For this study, the data is chiefly collected from the Wycliffite Bible (WB). The text we use is Forshall, J. and Madden,F.(eds.), The Holy Bible Containing The Old and New Testaments, with the Apocryphal Books, In the Earliest English Versions made from the Latin Vulgate by John Wycliffe and his Followers, Oxford University Press, 1850 (reprinted in 1982). In order to compare the development of derivatives with the suffix ‘-able’ with that of contemporary writings, derivatives with the suffix ‘-able’ from the works of Geoffrey Chaucer (CH), are frequently extracted from the text edited by L.D. Benson, The Riverside Chaucer, Third Edition, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1987. The suffix ‘-able’ was probably introduced into English from Latin or Old French in the 13th century independently of the introduction of the adjective ‘able’. Naturally, the number of derivatives with the suffix ‘-able’ must have multiplied after the introduction of the adjective ‘able’, a little after the introduction of the suffix ‘-able’ in the early 14th century. As a result of the current study, several unique characteristics of derivatives with ‘-able’ are identified in WB. Some of the characteristics are as follows. (i) Out of 101 words with ‘-able’ in WB, 66 words, 65.35%, are presumed to be the first appearance of these words in English. Out of 34 words with ‘-able’ in CH, 21 words, 61.76%, are presumed to be the first appearance of these words in English. Interestingly, the ratio is almost the same. (ii) The use of affixes seems to reflect Wycliffe’s firm belief that the Vulgate should be translated into English using the vulgar language. | |||||
