He set about this task by criticizing Scholastic theology under the influence of the German mysticism. This influence can be traced in his earlier writings, such as his “First Lectures on the Psalms” (1513-1515) and “Lectures on Romans” (1515-1516). We select the word “spiritus” in order to search out its anthropological and theological meaning. In the above-mentioned context, this paper seeks to elucidate the following point: 1. Previous researches on the word “spiritus” in Luther’s “First Lectures on the Psalms”. 2. The anthropological meaning of the “spiritus”. 3. Mystical consideration of “spiritus”. 4. The relation between “spiritus” and “Spiritus Sanctus” in Luther’s “Lectures on Romans”. 5. The meaning of the word “spiritus” in the writing of “Das Magnificat verdeutschet und ausgelegt” (1520-1521). 6.
