 note = {Presented here is a translation of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts (1780), a theological or religious-philosophical tract said to be of great impotance for German thinkers of later generations. Though several versions are already available in Japanese, the translator has attempted a new translation of this elusive manifesto on the basis of his own overall interpretation of Lessing’s philosophy of religion. The translation is based on vol.13 of the standard edition of Lachmann and Muncker, Gotthold Ephraim Lessings Sämtlich Schriften (1886-1924, reprinted in 1968). The translator has benefited from Henry Chadwick’s superb English translation wherever the meaning of sentences was ambiguous due to complicated syntax and/or the frequent use of rhetoric.},
