I focus on the meaning of “culture” in Japan in relation to the significance of Hajime Onishi, said “to have introduced Matthew Arnold to Japan for the first time.” Particular attention is paid to the problematic translation of Arnold’s concept of “culture,” denoting “brilliant civilization ／ high culture,” into Japanese, using the word 文華 (“brilliant ／ high culture”) rather than the generic 文化 (“culture”).},
