Jean Jacques Rousseau described this concept in his book, Emile , Book 4. The Second Birth refers to the process of transformation of a child into an adolescent, a life cycle in which the development of personality reaches a critical and radical turning point. Rousseau insisted on the need for education in that liminal and transitional period. For Rousseau, the term education didn’t indicate a scholastic education, but rather an education which, due to its ecological and generative nature, is negative. He declared the original meaning of education, and elucidated the second developmental stage of personality relative to the origin of language, or passion.
