This is in contrast to the materialist or empiricist position that language is a social phenomenon, primarily for communication. In recent years, the question of the evolution of the language faculty has received much attention. For Chomskyans, the language faculty is a recent evolutionary development that emerged suddenly as the result of a minor mutation.
