 note = {This paper intends to critically examine the significance and legacy of the Niebuhr brothers with special attention given to the American intellectual history of the twentieth century.　I begin by tracing the career paths of that “tandem” formed by Reinhold and H. Richard Niebuhrs that towered in the middle third of the twentieth century.　The survey of their intellectual pilgrimage and academic achievements is followed by consideration of their respective interpretations of American culture and history. For this purpose, Reinhold Niebuhr’s The Irony of American History (1952) and H. Richard Niebuhr’s The Kingdom of God in America (1937) are taken up for observation.　Based on the analysis of their specific interpretations of American history as illustrated in these books, I venture, in the final section, to make a critical comparison of the thoughts of the Niebuhr brothers from the standpoint of my own.　My inquiry will demonstrate the commonalities as well as major differences between the brothers.},
