This city is located at the eastern end of the Latin medieval world. Its characteristics are as follows: it is famous for Krakow University, established in the fourteenth century; economic prosperity was brought by long-distance trade; it was partly engaged in the Hanseatic League; and had links to various city-states in Italy. Some items like textiles, cloth, silk, and wine were brought into the city from all over Europe and even from the Far East. Another thing to note about the city is that it is culturally rich in the sense that printing, manuscripts, and book publishing developed, while guilds of hand-made craftsmen played a major role in the self-governance of the city. In the modern period, especially in the twentieth century, the city faced the terrors of Nazism and Communism. This article examines how major figures such as Pope John Paul II and the good habits and lifestyles of ordinary people helped the Polish people overcome these foes.
