Among multiple friendship patterns, this study focused on the extent to which adolescents with a disposition toward the avoidance of friendship disclosed themselves through LINE.  A web survey was conducted with Japanese college students (n＝302). The results of a cluster analysis of the friendship scale indicated that contemporary adolescents’ friendship patterns could be divided into three categories: adolescents who avoided emotionally close relationships, adolescents who simply tried to be together with their friends, and adolescents with individualistic and close relationships.  A comparison of the depth of self-disclosure in LINE and perceived utility among three groups showed that adolescents with a disposition toward friendship avoidance did not disclose themselves as deeply in LINE and perceived LINE as more restrictive.
