The materials are adopted from the model answer books for Chinese university entrance examinations. These essays are analyzed according to three perspectives: Ichikawa’s 1978 method for analyzing the qualitative differences in the contents of the sentences, the six elements of narrative writings, and expressive styles. We identify two characteristics of narrative writings. First, narrative writings are writings that focus on the narration of persons’ actions while including their inner lives. Second, narrative writings are not simple descriptions of events; rather, the person and order of speech are chosen to convey the writer’s intentions, and both the event itself and its causes and consequences are described.
