Level placement tests are common in university EFL programs, but there is little research into their validity.  In this paper, the literature was examined to determine the necessity of level division for English classes at Japanese universities, different methods for level division, and validity considerations for using a standardized test for level division.  This preliminary research will inform future validity studies into the EFL placement exam at a small university in Japan.},
