 note = {Reviewed are recent studies of the social relationships of Japanese seniors. The studies show consistent findings including (a) differential roles and functions of others in the personal network of seniors, (b) gender differences in social relationships and the higher risk of social isolation in men, and (c) the importance of functional capacity and financial adequacy in sustaining social relationships. Further studies seem necessary to (i) understand conjugal relations in old age, (ii) develop research methods for easily observing dyadic relations between seniors and the others surrounding them, and (iii) fully explore the relations seniors have with others on the periphery of personal networks.},
