 note = {The picture book as medium is examined in this study. How does the picture book function as a medium between the child and the adult? This question was considered from 3 viewpoints: the structure of the picture book, the cognitive structure of the picture book, and the relationship of parent and child through picture books. This study makes clear that, when a picture book is used by a child and an adult who has higher cognitive skills than the child, a restricted environment is created. This environment falls within an area which can be called the zone of proximal development: it promotes the child's cognitive development when parent and child are in this restricted environment.},
