 note = {The planning of the Asahi Touron Kai was complicated by two extreme and opposite views. One was the view of "thought pursuit type" that regarded Touron as one method employed in the pursuit of thought. The other was the view of "the game type," in which Touron was regarded as more of a pastime than a serious intellectual pursuit. This polarization of views, due partly to constraints imposed by the post-World War II era, continues today. However, the Asahi Shimbun placed the "discussion" of these opposing views within the parameters of "the technical basics of democracy," a placement consciously recognized and commonly accepted by the leaders of Japan. Therefore, this form of the Asahi Touron Kai encapsulates and emblemizes the spread and development of post-war democracy in Japan.},
