 note = {The revised edition of the Sanseido textbook Shin Kokugo, issued in Japan at the beginning of the post-World War II days to be used in Japanese language departments in the new system of national high school education, was the only textbook of that time that dealt with the subject of debate. However, the chapter on debate was deleted from the third edition of the book and debate was not practiced any more in high school Japanese departments. In this way, guidance in the usage of language, especially in discussion, weakened and is behind the present lack of guidance in language usage and discussion. The present study compares the first edition, the third edition, and the teacher’s manuals for both of these editions in order to explore how the subject of debate was dealt with in the revised edition of the Sanseido textbook. Through this comparison, this paper will make clear that the revised edition placed particular emphasis on the forms of debate without dealing with the ways in which debate should actually be practiced},
