Sousuke Koyama, pastor of Honcho Church in Hakodate, was found dead while underinterrogation at the Hakodate Shinkawa detention center on March 26, 1942. His arrest and death took place a year after the Peace Preservation Law was revised to toughen punishments, and three years after the Religious Organization Act was enacted. The Religious Organization Act of 1939 attempted to forcibly bring together various Protestant religious bodies for the purpose of controlling and governing Christian thought and actions. The war-time government sanctioned Shintoism and the worship of the emperor as a living god and demanded that all citizens, including even those in its territories, subscribe to this. Rev. Koyama was martyred for his faith under these circumstances. Three months after his martyrdom, more than 130 other pastors were also arrested and punished under the Peace Preservation Law of 1941. The pastorship of Rev. Koyama unfortunately took place at a time when war caused extreme, abnormal societal stress and dysfunction.}, pages = {119--136}, title = {小山宗祐とその時代}, volume = {第24巻}, year = {2011}, yomi = {カトウ, ケイジ} }
