 note = {This study examines the communicative competence required of Japanese teachers. The aim of Japanese language education isto help learnersacquire communication-oriented Japanese. In other words, Japanese language learners are expected to acquire communicative competence in Japanese. However, the Agency for Cultural Affairs sets “Communication” as the center of training-course curriculums for Japanese language teachers. This paper examines descriptions in booksfor Japanese teacher traineesregarding the communicative competence required of Japanese language teachers, and shows that the communicative competence required of Japanese language teachers is not the same as the one required of Japanese language learners. It also points out that there is ample scope for discussion of how the communicative competence of a Japanese language teacher differs from that of a common member of Japanese society.},
