While the rest of the modal auxiliaries have clear-cut distinctions between Root and Episteme, CAN looks fuzzy. Coates (1983) says that CAN is the only modal auxiliary where the Root-Epistemic distinction is not found. She asserts that there is no epistemic meaning in CAN and that CAN’T is an invariant form which supplies the negative for the epistemic MUST paradigm. The chief intent of this paper is to point out some deficiencies in Coates’ theory, based on my investigation into the meanings of the modal auxiliaries in written and spoken English.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0915-2539","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"寺田, 正義"},{"creatorName":"テラダ, マサヨシ","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"3792","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-09-13"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"1890.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"779.8 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"寺田正義_CANの認識様態的意味について_聖学院大学論叢4巻2号.pdf","url":"https://serve.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/66/files/1890.pdf"},"version_id":"11b32dc7-8e2a-4ac9-821d-6adf37e8b9bf"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"Epistemic","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":" Root","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":" Modality","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":" Semantic meaning","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":" Fuzzy set","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"CANの認識様態的意味について","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"CANの認識様態的意味について"},{"subitem_title":"On the Epistemic Meaning of CAN","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"3","path":["13"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2017-09-13"},"publish_date":"2017-09-13","publish_status":"0","recid":"66","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["CANの認識様態的意味について"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-23T13:24:18.114025+00:00"}
