Carpenter examined problems occurring in the modern civilized society of England, where modernization first began, since it is widely recognized that the start of the factory system began with the Industrial Revolution in England and that the mechanization which the Industrial Revolution brought in its wake was seen as a threat. Change in the history of reality, in which nature is included, takes place in extremely long units of 10,000 or more years, and cannot adequately be depicted linearly. Such change takes the form of a composite body of horizontally-divided and multilayered measures of time.
