The author conducted class discussions on the topic of “problems that do not have only one solution”. As a result, students’ reactions were divided into two types : “It was fun” and “It was hard.” This paper presents the interview data and studies the difference between the two reactions. Students who found discussions hard thought that there was a single solution and felt it was psychologically burdensome to express their opinion in order to find a solution through discussion.
