Hall pioneered in the United States in the 19th century. O. Chrisman, a student of S. Hall, proposed a new concept, “Paidology”, defined as “the scientific study of the child”. This notion was introduced into Japanese academia and has been the basis for various activities in child studies in Japan ever since. Currently, many colleges and universities in Japan have child studies programs. What significance do child studies programs have in the curricula of Japanese universities which train childcare workers and kindergarten teachers?
