 note = {前報(1)では,わが国では未だほとんど知られていないルイス・クラーク探検隊The Lewis and Clark Expedition(1804年5月14日-1806年9月23日)について,第三代大統領トーマス・ジェファソンの領土政策と合衆国領土意識の形成の観点から考察を試みた。同探検隊は最初の北米大陸横断を成し遂げ,現地踏査によって西部域についての多くの情報を得,独立間もないアメリカ合衆国西部域についての認識を確定したが,白人隊員のみでその歴史的探検を成し遂げたのではなく,先住民(所謂インディアン)の少女サカジャウェアの助けを得てその任務を全うすることが出来た。先住民レミ・ショショニ族の少女サカジャウェアは,現在のアイダホ州に生まれ育ちノースダコタ州で暮らしていたが大陸北西部を踏査し太平洋に至るルート発見の任務を帯びた同探検隊に約21ヵ月間(1804年11月4日から1806年8月14日まで)随行して,その往路と復路の白人の探検隊にとって未踏の行程部分の道案内と通訳を務めた。「発見の探検隊」The Corps of Discoveryと讃えられているこの国軍の部隊を先導しアメリカ建国神話に不可欠なキャラクターとなっているこの先住民サカジャウェアについては同探検隊の関係資料以外には信頼できる資料が極めて少なく,サカジャウェアをめぐる伝記や著作また製作された商業映画の大半は出所の不明な伝承や巷説を含み多くの脚色が加えられている。本試論は,ルイス・クラーク探検隊の日誌を含む諸記録と関連する諸資料によって,サカジャウェアのルイス・クラーク探検隊への具体的な貢献を明らかにすることにより,先住民・少数民族への感傷やフェミニズムからの歪んだ過度の賞賛などを除去した評価を試みた。, The Lewis and Clark Expedition(14. May 1804-23. Sept. 1806)was assisted by a native American girl named Sacagawea. Sacagawea is one of the most renowned figures of the American West. She was originally from the Shoshone tribe, had been captured by the Hidatsa when she was a child, and eventually became one of the wives of a French fur trader. In 1805 Sacagawea, with her French husband, joined Lewis and Clark as the expedition’s interpreter and route guide when she was still a teenager. The Corps of Discovery had been accompanied by Sacagawea for twenty-one months, from 4. Nov. 1804 to 14. Aug. 1806. Sacagawea turned out to be incredibly valuable to the Corps as it traveled westward through the territories of many tribes unknown to the Caucasians. The facts about Sacagawea were “discovered” by Eva Emery Dye (1855-1947) in Dye’s work, Conquest : the True Story of Lewis and Clark (1902). Since then, Sacagawea has been a heroine in histories, works of fiction, plays, films, and visual arts. This paper intends to reveal the real Sacagawea through examination of primary sources and show how her reputation has changed over the years.},
