The conclusion of this paper is as follows : In the 19th century there was a conflict, in children's books, between writing for educational purposes (didacticism) and writing mainly to entertain. Illustrations in picture books of the time were used effectively and powerfully for both education and entertainment and strengthened the messages. However, due to “Beauty and the Beast” being excerpted from Le Magasin des enfants and published as a single book, the didactic quality of Madame Beaumont’s original story was dissipated and ultimately lost.
