 note = {庭園様式の変遷には，時代精神の変化が反映している。英語による講義などにおいて非日本人に日本庭園の歴史，特に日本庭園の様式の変遷を説明する際，グローバルに受け容れられる日本庭園史の時代区分が必要になる。これまで学校教育でも用いられてきた従来の日本史の時代区分は，奈良時代・鎌倉時代・江戸時代などの政治権力の地理上の所在地を並べたものであって，その時代名によっては庭園様式に変化を与えた時代精神の変遷を窺い知ることは出来ない。しかしこれまで殆ど全ての日本庭園史は，時代区分を従来の日本史の時代区分に依っている。この問題に関して，政治形態の変革によって時代区分を図った伊達千広（1802〜1877）による「大勢三転考」（1848）は骨の代，職の代，名の代と「カバネ」，「ツカサ」，「ミョウ」の時代区分をし，政治形態の変革によって各画期を定めるという客観的で本格的な歴史区分であり，日本庭園史の時代区分に有効である。　本試論は，19 世紀の中葉に伊達が著した三転考にそれ以後の明治維新以降の時代を「衆の時代（代）」として加え本邦の歴史を四転考によって捉え，各時代名に対応する英語名を付すことにより，具体的な必要としては英語講義のための日本庭園史の時代区分とした。, Gardens are a reflection of people’s view of nature and view of life. When we appreciate gardens, we may come close to the view of nature or the sense of values behind the garden layout derived from those values. When we look back at the history of Japanese gardens and try to comprehend changes in garden styles, we need a clear “periodization of Japanese Garden History”. The periodization used so far for that purpose has followed the periodization for general Japanese History: the Nara Period, the Heian Period, the Kamakura Period, the Edo Period. This periodization only refers to the geographical location of political power and does not indicate the cultural climate, nor the Zeitgeist (the spirit of the times) which influenced transitions in garden styles.　 Employing the “Taisei Santen Kou” (The Consideration of the Three Ages Shift) by DATE Chihiro (1802〜1877), the author tries to introduce a new periodization of Japanese History which may well coincide with the Japanese Garden Style transition; The Age of Clans (The Age of Blood Relationship: The Asuka Period); The Age of Office (The Age of Official Postings: The Nara and Heian Periods); The Age of Titles (The Age of Feudal Rank: The Kamakura, Muromachi, Azuchi-Momoyama, and The Edo Periods), and The Age of People (The Age of Democracy: The Meiji, Taisho, and Showa Periods)},
